Full Description

Twenty two trial trenches were excavated by Northamptonshire Archaeology in August 2004 on land off Barnack Road, Stamford. Roman industrial activity indicating the possible presence of an iron smelting furnace was revealed. Trench twelve contained a pit with charcoal, burnt stone and slag within it. The layer above this pit contained Roman pottery suggesting that the pit was probably Roman in date. The pit was used for hot slag suggesting that ironworking was taking place nearby. {1}{2}
