Full Description

A Handley Page Halifax Mk V crashed in the area around Newton Ings Farm, to the south-east of Toft Newton, on the 16th of December 1943. The aircraft was designated EB185, and was flying on a night training flight from RAF Faldingworth. The cause of the accident is not known, although thick fog conditions were recorded on that evening. The aircraft crashed at 23:25, killing all the crew onboard. The crash site was confirmed in early 2009, after a metal detecting survey revealed an area of magnetic anomalies in this location. {1}{2} A subsequent excavation of the crash site was conducted in August 2009. Two propeller bosses, two engines and some of the aircraft skin and framework were recovered. The position of the remains indicated that the aircraft hit the ground at a fairly shallow angle, suggesting that the aircraft was attempting to land back at RAF Faldingworth, when it descended too low in the fog, hitting the ground and breaking apart. {3}
