Full Description

The site of St Giles medieval hospital. The hospital was established at some time in the thirteenth century and before 1280, initially for the poor but later for 12 poor ministers and retired servants from the cathedral. It became an almshouse for poor clerks until the eighteenth century. {1} A watching brief was undertaken in 2011 during the groundworks for an extension to 5 Auden Close. Ten inhumations were revealed buried in a west to east alignment. Six of the graves were excavated and the rest were not disturbed. Two of the excavated burials were in stone-lined cists. The excavated burials were of both men and women mainly in their twenties and thirties, and several had scarring on their bones that were indicative of poor diet, disease and trauma. There was evidence for tuberculosis, possibly syphilis and healed rib breaks. Of particular interest was the body of a young woman, aged 22 to 27 at death, who had lost the ends of each of her toes, and although this may be through leprosy or another degenerative disease, another possibility is that these were amputated following crushing. Although the woman survived for a while, she died relatively soon after and, during burial, a small child’s bracelet was placed in the grave, perhaps by one of her offspring. Thirteenth-century pottery and medieval roof tiles were found with some of the burials. Limestone walls and a possible path, both possibly linked with the original hospital, were also found along with two pits which contained residual Roman pottery [see PRN 71126] and residual medieval to post medieval roof tile. {2}{3}
