Full Description
The United Methodist Church is indicated on the 1931 OS County Series map. It was built in 1865 and is now in use as a restaurant and the adjacent Sunday School is now in use as a house. The former chapel is built of red brick with a gault brick frontage with red brick dressings. The raised gable has stone copings and kneelers and a broad band of red brick in the verges. There are two tiers of openings, separated by a band of red brick, set in stepped round-headed recesses. The taller central recess, which has a dentil brick arch, contained the original round-arched doorway, with a red brick arch, which is now largely obscured by modern alterations to the front. In the central recess above the doorway are three tablets whose inscriptions have been partially erased but are still visible. The upper tablet has a gabled upper edge and is inscribed 'UNITED METHODIST FREE CHURCHES'. The rectangular tablet below is inscribed 'BETHEL' and the smaller rectangular below that has the date of 1865. In the upper tier the lateral bays have tall round-headed windows with red brick dressings and blank, tall, narrow recesses to either side. A corbel table with stepped corbels lies at the level of the imposts of the recesses. The lower tier is now largely obscured by a modern frontage although the arrangement can be seen to reflect that of the upper tier. The outer recesses at this level have round arches and tall narrow openings. The lower gabled building attached to the east represents a Sunday School. It has been refenestrated but can be seen to have had the same arrangement of round-arched bays which have been blocked. {1}{2}
