Full Description
PRN 25679
The Wesleyan chapel is indicated on the 1904 OS County Series map. The small building behind the present chapel was the original chapel built in 1812. It is now the schoolroom to the later chapel which was built in front in 1902 by the architect J.R. Baker, from Moulton Chapel, who also built the almost identical chapel at Pinchbeck Northgate in 1925 (PRN 25662).The chapel of 1902 is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and has a gabled roof with a slate covering and ornamental ridge copings. The overhanging eaves rest on wooden supports. The gable facing the road has a canted bay with a three-light window with gothic cusped tracery and ashlar arches. Below is an ashlar string-course. with a lobed ornament, above bands of foundation stones. Above, in the gable, is a band of ashlar inscribed 'WESLEYAN CHURCH'. The raised gable has stone copings and a roll at the apex. The side elevations have four bays including two bays of flat-headed windows, but the second bays have a large pointed window with gothic plate tracery under a gable. The stained glass has fleur de lys motifs. The rear bays are occupied by gabled porches with pointed doorways. This chapel is almost identical to the Primitive Methodist Chapel at Pinchbeck Northgate with the exception of the porches. The earlier chapel behind is built of red brick and has a hipped roof with a slate covering. The original front had three bays of round-headed openings but the present front has a square-headed doorway with a round-arched window above. The side elevation has two bays of round-arched windows. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
