Full Description

PRN 25671 The Primitive Methodist chapel is indicated on the 1931 OS County Series Map. It is still in use as a Methodist Chapel. The first Primitive Methodist chapel in Spalding was in Malting House Square. In 1821 a carpenters' workshop next to the prior's oven was adapted for use as a chapel. This was replaced by a chapel in the Crescent in 1853 which closed with the opening of the St Thomas' Road chapel in 1871 or 1877. It then became a Temperance Hall and was also used by the railway mission. It has since been demolished. The present chapel was modernised in 1954-55 prior to the merger with the Crescent United Methodist chapel. The chapel is constructed of red brick with gault brick dressings and has a gabled roof with a welsh slate covering. The front elevation has a pedimental raised gable with stone copings and kneelers and has been altered and a modern gabled porch has been added. A photograph of the original façade survives. The three bays are divided by brick pilasters with yellow brick bands. The tall, round-arched, central bay was originally recessed and extended up into the pediment with a double band of yellow gault brick in the arch (this bay is now blocked). The central bay included a round-arched doorway with yellow brick dressings and paired doors with a light, with radiating spokes, above. Above the doorway were a pair of tall round-arched windows with yellow brick dressings, an oculus between and a stone tablet above. The lateral bays had tall round-arched windows with coloured margin lights (these windows have since been replaced with wider, shorter, windows). The pediment has broad verges of yellow brick and dentil brick in the verges and cornice. The side elevations had five bays of tall round-headed windows with red brick dressings separated by brick pilasters. The windows of the rear bays of both side elevations are now blocked. To the rear is a lower gabled annexe with segmental-headed windows and flat-roofed porches to each side. {1}{2}{3}{4}
