Full Description
PRN 25669
A church is indicated on the 1931 OS County Series Map. The building survives and is now in use as a furniture warehouse. Its denomination is unclear but it may represent the Congregational church, which had 52 members, which was built in Holbeach in 1870. It is constructed in Neo-Romanesque style of red brick with stone and gault brick dressings. It has a gabled roof with a slate covering. The raised gable has stone copings and kneelers and a stone finial at the apex. The front gable has three stepped semi-circular arches with hood moulds but the original front has been grossly altered by the insertion of a single large opening. The gable verges are stepped courses of brick. The side elevations are largely obscured but appear to have two tiers of windows with a lower aisle and upper clerestorey level. The upper tier is partially visible and consists of three bays of pairs of round-arched windows with gault brick arches. To the south-west of the front elevation is a projecting gabled cell with a polygonal apse and blocked round-arched doorway with moulded hoodmould which has the appearance of a baptistry. Above the blocked doorway are three narrow flat-headed windows and the apse has narrow flat-headed slit openings. The raised gable has stone copings and a finial and a broad band of ashlar across the gable. The corresponding north east side has a rectangular flat-roofed extension. {1}{2}{3}{4}
