Full Description
PRN 25662
A Primitive Methodist Chapel is indicated on the 1904 OS County Series map. The current building on the site was built in 1925 by the architect J. R. Baker, from Moulton Chapel, to replace the chapel of 1845 which was known as the Hosannah Primitive Methodist Chapel. The same architect built an almost identical chapel at Moulton Chapel in 1902 (PRN 25679). The Sunday School from the earlier chapel, with round-arched openings and dentil brick cornices, was retained. A photograph of the earlier chapel shows that it was gabled with overhanging eaves, pantiles, a gabled porch and flat-headed sash windows. The current chapel closed in 1997 and is now in use as a chapel named 'Anjeli Chapel'. A metal plaque states that 'This chapel was rebuilt in 1925 and renovated from 1998-2005'. The present chapel is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and has a gabled roof with a slate covering and ornamental ridge copings. The gable facing the road has a canted bay window with a three-light window with gothic cusped tracery and ashlar arches. Below is an ashlar string-course, with a lobed ornament, above bands of foundation stones. Above, in the gable, is a band of ashlar inscribed 'PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH'. The raised gable has stone copings and a roll at the apex. The side elevations have four bays. The east elevation has three bays of flat-headed windows, but the second bay has a large pointed window with gothic plate tracery under a gable. The west elevation is corresponding but has a porch containing a flat-headed doorway over the rear bay.{1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
