Full Description
A Primitive Methodist chapel of 1838 is recorded at Crowland in documentary sources. The current chapel building was constructed in 1862, and may represent the successor to the earlier chapel. The surviving chapel is now used by the Royal British Legion. It is built of red brick with gault brick dressings and has a gabled roof with a slate covering. The original gabled front elevation is partially obscured by a modern addition. It has four bays of round-arched windows with gault brick arches which appear to have formed an upper tier, though they may have been shortened. The outer windows are blocked and the two central windows have plastic frames. The pedimented gable has a stone tablet with the date of 1862, though the remainder of the inscription has been defaced. The gabled front has clasping terminal pilasters of gault brick. The side elevations have six bays of segmental-headed windows with gault brick arches, some now blocked and the others replaced with plastic frames. To the rear is an adjoining, lower, gabled building with a stone tablet inscribed 'Erected 1903'. It has four recessed bays of blocked segmental-headed windows and a segmental-headed doorway. It probably represents a former Sunday School. {1}{2}{3}{4}
