Full Description
A United Free Methodist Chapel is indicated on the 1904 OS County Series map. A dissenters certificate was issued in 1822 and the first chapel, belonging to the Wesleyan Methodists, was built in 1842. The congregation subsequently joined the Free Methodists but continued to use the chapel. In 1861 there was either a new building or a conveyance to the Free Methodists. In 1912 the new chapel was built alongside. It closed in 1983 and is now a dwelling house. It is built of red brick with ashlar dressings and has a gabled roof with a slate covering. The gabled front elevation has three bays of round-headed openings with a central gabled porch containing a round-headed doorway with a plain light. Above the door is a semi-circular lunette with an ashlar arch which has an inscription which has been defaced and is indecipherable. A decorative iron grill is set within the lunette. The gables of the main building, and of the porch, have finials and wooden boards. The porch is flanked by round-headed windows with ashlar arches and keystones and leaded coloured glass. The side elevations have three bays of round-headed windows with darker red brick arches and keystones and dark red brick string-courses; a single row of bricks at window impost level and a double row at cill level. Internally, secondary windows have been added behind the originals. The south-east elevation has a segmental-headed doorway towards the rear and a central window with leaded pictorial stained glass. There are several foundation stones. {1}{2}{3}{4}
