Full Description

PRN 25649 The former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, which was built in 1898, is indicated on the 1931 OS County Series map. It has since been converted into part of a house. It may represent a rebuilding of the chapel on Holbeach Marsh built in 1827, and rebuilt on a new site in 1841, which is recorded in documentary sources. This chapel was 5 miles from the parish church and was attended by the inhabitants 'through the the great distance of the church'. The chapel is still marked as such on the 1974 OS 1:10000 map. The extant building is built of red brick with stone dressings, with a gabled roof, which has a slate covering and ornamental terracotta ridge copings. The gable elevation has clasping terminal brick pilasters and three stepped lancet windows with stone arches. The gable verge has a broad band of brick, ornamented with a zig-zag ornament, as are the terminal pilasters. The gable is recessed, and contains a small trefoil opening in stone with borders inscribed 'Wesley Church 1898'. The side elevations have four bays of pointed windows, separated by brick pilasters, and terracotta zig-zag ornament in the eaves cornices. The building has a brick plinth and several foundation stones. An adjacent, gabled, brick building is indicated on the County map within the same boundary as the chapel.{1}{2}{3}{4}{5} There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel on the site marked on the 1888 OS County Series map. {6}
