PRN 38964
The stone foundations of a Roman building or buildings were discovered during a watching brief. The foundations, which were robbed out in places, probably represent a 'strip house', a type of Roman building often found alongside roads and usually associated with the manufacture and/or selling of goods. A series of burnt deposits may be associated with some form of industrial activity or may represent a domestic oven. The presence of this building suggests that the Roman town (PRN 30324) extends further to the south than previously thought. Pottery including Samian ware and amphorae sherds was recovered as well as three pieces of tile. The pottery includes 1st to 2nd century fine wares, including decorated Samian, whilst the later (3rd to 4th century) wares are coarser suggesting a possible change of use of the building. The early pottery also includes rusticated jars of a type often associated with the military. {1}{2}
