Full Description

PRN 71056 Five trenches were excavated by Archaeological Project Services in October 2009 on land at the former Army Cadet Force HQ, Newport. Trench one revealed a posthole/pit and contained 2nd and early to mid 3rd century pottery, tile, fired clay, a hobnail and animal bone. Trench two revealed a ditch which contained 3rd century pottery. Within Trench three was a 2nd to 3rd century vessel which contained a cremation and ditches and gullies containing 3rd to 4th century pottery, burnt stone, an iron nail and animal bone. An extended human skeleton was also found in a grave which revealed residual or redeposited late 2nd to 3rd century pottery. Trench five contained a pit in which was found late 1st to early 2nd century pottery and hobnails and else in the trench, a flexed inhumation with two early to mid 2nd century vessels and a cattle shoulder blade was found. {1}{2} During excavation in January to February 2010 and a watching brief in February to July 2010 by Archaeological Project Services, numerous Roman ditches and pits were found which contained Roman pottery, ceramic building material, animal bone, iron smithing slag, a copper alloy pin and limestone blocks. Four prone adult skeletons and disarticulated human remains were also found. One skeleton had a possible saw laid on the pelvis and one was with disarticulated juvenile remains. {3}{4}
