Full Description
The Spalding Gentlemen's Society's physic garden is shown on John Grundy's map of 1732, south of Love Lane, opposite the church of St Mary and St Nicolas. The founder of the Society, Maurice Johnson II, had connections with the Chelsea Physic Garden and it seems likely that the garden in Spalding was influenced to a considerable extent by developments of Chelsea, where plants were grown for medicinal and scientific/botanical purposes. A keen interest in botany is evident in the Minute Books of the Gentlemen's Society and in the surviving correspondence of Maurice Johnson II. The physic garden was transferred in 1743, to the grounds of nearby Gayton House (see PRN 22391). {1}{2}
