Full Description
An armlet (armilla) of bronze twisted with an internal diameter of two and a half inches found when digging the foundations of the new courthouse (known at the time as the New County Hall) in December 1822. Four or five other armillae were found at the same spot at a depth of twenty feet or more. The armillae were broken but were ornamented with circular marks engraved or impressed on the outside. Many foundations of buildings were found at the same time. Some of these were anciently arched over with semi-circular arches. The artefacts were in the collection of Mr E. J. Willson in 1848. {1}
P. Davey records similar armillae from Kingerby as Bronze Age but fails to mention these Lincoln finds although reported from the same source {see PRN50591). A Bronze Age date for these armlets must be somewhat circumstantial. {2}
