Full Description

19th century school, at one time part of the National Schools system, now a community centre. The building shows numerous typically Victorian details including faience and stone detailing. {1} The western building is an L-plan one and a half storey red brick building in Flemish Bond, under a pitched gabled slate roof. Dormer vents with decorative barge boards and louvres. Two gable stacks. Brick plinth. The western wall of this building has been built on and around the surviving Roman wall. This building shares a low walled courtyard with a large multiphase red brick building in English Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Two coped parapet gables with fleur de lis detailing on the coped ridge. Two ridge stacks. Stone window surrounds on some windows, and at least one has polychromatic brick decoration. {2} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the National School was attended by 200 boys and 100 girls at the time. By 1872 the attendance had dropped to 126 boys and 100 girls. {3}{4} It is said that the school was built on land donated by Sir Joseph Banks, using wood from his Revesby Estate. Enough timber was provided that some was auctioned off to help cover the costs of construction. {5}
