Full Description

A probable north-east to south-west aligned ditch was identified in May 2009, during the monitoring of groundworks for a new manhole on Norfolk Street, Boston. The ditch was at least 1.2m wide and 0.45m deep, cutting a layer interpreted as being alluvial in origin. Finds recovered from the primary fill of the ditch included three sherds of pottery, three fragments of tile and a small quantity of animal bone, and indicated the ditch was still open in the second half of the 16th century. The ditch may have formed the rear boundary of a property fronting onto Wide Bargate. {1}{2}
