Full Description

PRN 25618 Romano-British features including ditches, pits and post holes were recorded on land to the northwest of Gosberton Clough, during the monitoring of works relating to the installation of a replacement watermain. To the west (designated Field 15), a pit or ditch was associated with 3rd century pottery; a ditch, aligned north to south and recut on at least one occasion, was found in the same area. The main focus of the investigations took place in an adjacent field to the east (Field 16), within an area extending around 40m from the western field boundary. Here, the excavated features were 3rd to 4th century in date. The activity was bounded to the east by a broad linear cut,aligned north to south and which was interpreted as a probable creek. Pottery of mid 3rd to 4th century date was found in silts filling the upper levels of the feature. West of the creek, a large ditch, also aligned north to south, was abutted by a smaller ditch, aligned east to west. The main ditch had probably silted up when a second north to south ditch was excavated yet further to the west, cutting the terminal end of the east to west ditch. The later ditch had an offshoot to the east, which had been remodelled on several occasions. A pair of postholes was found in the area west of the ditches, while an alignment of four postholes, flanked by a short gully and a gully or pit, was found in the area bounded by the main ditches. Two large pits were recorded on the eastern side of the complex, one cutting into the eastern ditch. {1}{2}{3}
