Full Description

PRN 71045 Undated features were located during an archaeological watching brief in April 2009, on land to the rear of 90 High Street. Much of the stratigraphy had been destroyed by a cellar, which was removed as part of groundworks associated with the development. Deposits interpreted as windblown or alluvial sands extended throughout the surviving areas, interleaved to the west by a layer of black (manganese stained?) sand, and sealed by a buried soil horizon. East of the cellar, the natural sands had been cut by a small pit and two larger cuts. To the west, the buried soil was cut by a pit. All of the above stratigraphy was overlain by a layer of dark soil interpreted as part of the modern buildup or a levelling layer. The latter was in turn cut by a pit whose fill contained frequent building material indicative of a robber trench or the demolition of a nearby structure. The pit was overlain by another layer of dark soil. There were no finds from the site. {1}{2}
