Full Description

PRN 24126 This is a building identified as of historical interest by the South Holland District Council Local List. It is a good example of this style of building of this period and survives with only a few changes to its original construction. There is no further information available at this time. {1} The chapel was visited in 2010. It is still in use as a Baptist chapel. A society formed about 1773 by Henry Poole, previously minister at Fleet, built a meeting-house in Lutton in 1776; Poole later adopted Universalist views and the church became Unitarian. A new society which was initially a branch of the Fleet society was formed about 1818 and the present chapel was built in 1841. It is built of brick with a gault brick front and side elevations of red brick with gault brick dressings. The roof is gabled with a covering of modern tiles. The front gable is raised with a broad band of brick in the verges with dog tooth brickwork to the underside. The wide gabled front is terminated by stepped buttresses and these, and the apex, have gabled pinnacles. The front has a central pointed arched doorway between tall paired lancets and three graduated lancets above. The side elevations have three bays of paired lancet windows with gault brick dressings separated by stepped gault brick buttresses. There are several annexes to the rear and east. A large burial ground to the rear has a variety of monument types. {2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
