Full Description

PRN 24106 [includes PRN 25682 which has now been deleted.] This is a building identified as of historical interest by the South Holland District Council Local List. It is a good example of this style of building of this period but has, in the past, been altered and has lost many of its original features and its historic character. {1} A Congregational Church is indicated on the 1931 OS County Series map. It is still marked as a chapel on the 1975 OS 1:10000 map. In 2010 it appears to be undergoing conversion for some other use. The building, of 1916, on the opposite side of London Road, which was at some time a United Reform Church, could have been a Sunday School for this church (PRN 24103). The former Congregational church was built in 1818 and is constructed of red brick. It has a gabled roof which has a covering of welsh slate. The front gable is raised with stone copings and is surmounted by a gabled bell turret. The lower storey of the front gable is rendered and the upper storey and gable are painted white. The broad gable verges have a row of dog-tooth brick. The gable elevation has three bays and two tiers of windows. The lower tier has a central shallow gabled porch with a round-headed doorway. The arch has a roll-moulding and one order of pilasters with moulded capitals. The moulded hoodmould has dog-tooth stops. The doorway is flanked by narrow round-arched windows. The upper tier has a large central two-light window flanked by smaller round-arched windows with painted arches. The central window has two lights and circular glazing in the head. It has one order of octagonal colonnettes in the jambs, with moulded square capitals, and a moulded hoodmould on stops. The windows have leaded stained glass. The side elevations have been refenestrated but a round-arched window remains on the south-east elevation. {2}{3}{4}{5}{6} A former chapel, currently undergoing renovations (2011) but is two storeys high with porch. {7}
