Full Description

PRN 24103 This is a building identified as of historical interest by the South Holland District Council Local List. It is a good example of this style of building of this period but has, in the past, been altered and has lost many of its original features and its historic character. {1} The building was visited in 2010. It is now in use as a Montessori Nursery. The former church on the opposite side of London Road is indicated as a Congregational Church on the 1931 OS County Series map (PRN 25682) and is still marked as a chapel on the 1975 OS 1:10000 map. This building of 1916 may therefore originally have been the Sunday School for that church. It is built of red brick with stone dressings and has a gabled roof with a slate covering. The front gable is raised with stone copings and kneelers and has an arched gabled stone at the apex. There are three bays of openings with a central square-headed doorway with a flat hood supported on stone brackets attached to splayed brick walls. The flat hood bears the inscription 'UNITED REFORMED CHURCH'. The paired doors have a divided rectangular light above. To either side are tall windows with arched stone lintels. The frames have been replaced with UPVC. A broad rectangular opening above the door is obscured by a nursery sign but has a stone lintel with an arched panel inscribed 1916. There are two string-courses at the level of the heads of the openings formed by three courses of gault brick. There are several foundation stones. The side elevation has 3 bays of square-headed windows with glazing bars and two further blank bays towards the rear separated by buttresses with stone cappings. The rear gable has a large square-headed window with four lights and a stone lintel. To the south-east is an attached flat-roofed annexe.{1}{2}{3}{4}
