Full Description

A manor house, now farmhouse, built in c.1636 which underwent alteration in c.1870 and reduced and adapted in the 19th century. It was constructed of red brick with a hipped slate roof and three stacks to rear. The house stands on moated site and part of the moat is intact to east (see PRN50314). For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} 'Old Hall' as indicated on 1:10560 Ordnance Survey map. {2} A post medieval 17th century manor house farm on a moated site. {3} Manor Farm (formerly 'Old Hall') is basically the south wing of a Fen Artisan Mannerist house of red brick, presumably dating to about 1660. A limestone block bearing the initials 'E.B.' [presumably Edward Burgh, who, following the death of three brothers in 1627 succeeded to the property on his mother's death in 1632] and the date '1633', reused inverted in the south east quoin, may indicate the date of an earlier building. The house was reduced at least by removal of an east wing and adapted to a farmhouse in the 19th century. Armstrong's county map of 1776-78 depicts a residence within a tree-planted setting. {4} Unnamed farmstead, Stow. Extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with linked working buildings to all four sides of the yard. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. Located within a Church and/or Manor farm group. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site. {5}
