Full Description

An early 19th century, red brick, house with a pantile roof with brick coped gables, kneelers, dentillated eaves and gable stacks. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} A field visit to Hermitage House occurred in January 2015, and new aspects of the house were observed, including elements of an earlier structure, incorporated into the present building. The earliest part of the house is contained within the central portion of the southern elevation, and consists of irregularly coursed limestone rubble up to the first floor. This is likely the remains of a yeoman farmer's house, with a floorplan that follows a baffle entry plan, which was common in the late 16th or early 17th century. The southern elevation would have originally been the front of the house, but this was later changed. The house was then extended and altered in the late 18th or early 19th century, and again in the late 19th century. The first episode of alteration added the main, west facing section of the house, which is built in brick in various bonds, and follows the polite architectural style. A second storey was also added to the southern elevation, and most of this elevation was faced with bricks in Flemish bond. In the later 19th century, the kitchen was extended and more residential accommodation was added to the north of the central southern elevation, and a dairy was added on the eastern end. These two extensions are constructed out of brick, laid in English Garden Wall bond. The entire building has a timber framed roof covered in red pantiles, but there is evidence showing that the farmhouse was probably originally thatched. The farmhouse underwent major renovations in the 1980s. The report also provides details of the extensive social history of the house, and discusses the families that owned and/or lived in the property since the late 18th century. {2}
