Full Description

PRN 38852 [Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.] This timber framed corner house is late medieval and has a first floor jetty on the north and most of the west. There is a much rebuilt chimney stack on the south. The date 1605 is scratched into the plaster of the west gable. The interior includes an early chamfered dragon beam. {1} This house is probably of 17th century date [this is probably incorrect - see above]. It has an oversailing upper storey in stucco, possibly half timbered, and a modern ground floor including shop windows. The slate roof is late 17th century with the remains of an earlier gable, inscribed 1605, on the St Mary's Place frontage. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} This medieval timber framed house has no visible timbers as the first floor, including the jetty, is rendered. The date 1605 scratched into the plaster of a gable may refer to some modifications rather than the original building. {4}
