Full Description

Former public house, now house, dating from 1789 and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Built of squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, and features a concrete tiled roof with a red brick gable stack. It is of three storeys, and has a three-bay front with central 20th century door and overlight having inset boot scrapers to each side, flanked by single margin lights. To the first floor are three similar windows. The ground and first floor openings have segmental stone heads with raised keystones. To the second floor is a central datestone with '1789' in raised numbers, flanked by single two-light sliding glazing bar sashes with flat splayed arches. Over the door is a faded sign painted onto the stonework 'Thirtle' with end scrolls. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2} Thirtle is not labelled as a public house on the 1st edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map, unlike other establishments in the village at that time. This would suggest that the use of the building had changed at some point prior to this survey in the late 19th century. {3} Thirtle was re-assessed for listing in October 2025, with the discovery that significant alterations had been made to the building at several points in the 20th century. The exterior of the structure is now largely a facsimile of an 18th century building, and little of historic interest survives internally. The extent of these alterations was not known at the time of the original listing, and the new assessment has revealed that the building does not retain sufficient historical integrity to warrant retention on the National Heritage List for England. Alongside the 1789 datestone on the front elevation, two further datestones marked '1792' and '1871' are located on the rear of the building, suggesting the dates of some previous alterations. The exact date that use of the building as a public house ceased is not clear, although it is known that the ground floor of the building was in use as a branch of the Midland Bank in the 1930s. Part commercial use of structure continued throughout the mid 20th century, with half of the ground floor in use as a butcher's shop, and the other half now in residential use. The property was fully converted into a private dwelling in the 1970s. {4}{5}
