[Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.]
This house was built in 1834 for Joseph Phillips, a brewer. Interior fittings of this date survive throughout and include a staircase, fireplaces, shutters, plaster cornices and pilasters. Reset in the wall of the adjacent brewery is a datestone inscribed 'JPJ 1791' for Joseph and Judith Phillips, parents of the builder of this house. {1}
This large two storey house is dated 1795 [this date is probably incorrect - see above]. The 19th century doorway has a cast iron lamp on a bracket and a cast iron balustrade.
