Full Description

8 and 9 Vine Street comprise a shop and public house, probably constructed during the 16th century, with later phases of the 18th and 19th centuries. The inn at number 9 is first recorded as the ‘Blue Pig public house’ in a local newspaper article of 1812, when the landlord at that time (Mr J. Blow) was reported as recently passing. Around this time, the local landowning Manners family acquired a number of pubs, inns and hotels within Grantham and added the epithet ‘Blue’ to their names in reference to their allegiance to the Whig party. The building is arranged to a C-shaped plan, with the principal, earlier range facing Vine Street to the south and two additional ranges running north along the west and east boundaries of the plot, the easternmost fronting Swinegate. All three ranges are of two storeys, and feature gabled roofs of clay pantiles. The principal range is of squared and coursed limestone rubble to the ground floor and exposed timber framing with rendered infill to the first floor. The four easternmost bays of this range are the oldest, and form the public house, whilst the two westernmost bays are a later addition, though built in a matching style. They form a separate shop property, currently (2023) in use as a hairdressers. The three-bay range to the north of the older part and fronting Swinegate is of painted brickwork, and features a carriage entrance in its northernmost bay.
