Full Description
PRN 38627
These low, single storey cottages are probably 16th or 17th century date with later windows, and have a picturesque appearance. There is a projecting chimney stack with a cylindrical stone chimney, which is not Norman or 12th century as has been claimed. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
Reedman's Court (no. 9) contains evidence of a late medieval structure with an open hall. It has several smoke-blackened rafters dating from this phase. In the yard is a pair of 19th century houses (no. 10) built around 1830. No. 11 retains the outline and some of the structure of a medieval house, with a later extension to the rear. It has an external chimney stack with a cylindrical flue which is presumably of medieval date. The only surviving internal feature is a timber cross partition. {2}
The chimney is not 12th century, as has been claimed, but it may be an early column taken from St George's Church in the 15th century and re-used later. There is documentary evidence for a chimney being built at this house in 1627. {4}
