Full Description

PRN 38566 [Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.] This house has two stones inscribed with the date 1698, which is presumably the date of its construction. Some of the original fabric of the house including internal walls survives however it has been extensively altered, first in the mid 18th century (the window surrounds date from this time) and also in 1843-44 when alterations including the complete transformation of the north front were carried out by Bryan Browning for the Marquess of Exeter. The interior includes several re-sited 16th and 17th century fragments including a fireplace and a window in the basement. The early 17th century panelling in several rooms is also re-used. {1} This house has medieval origins [this is probably incorrect - see other sources] but was rebuilt in the late 17th century, with a classical style front added in the mid 19th century. It is two storeys in height with attic and basement and is constructed of ashlar stone. The interior includes panelled rooms and several moulded fireplaces. An 18th century barn to the rear is included in the curtilage of this building. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} The medieval origin of this house is considered to be 'doubtful', and apart from a small section of the rear wall which is thicker and rougher than the rest, there are no signs of any medieval building here. {3}
