Full Description

PRN 38391 [Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.] The earliest part of this house is a two storey range on the south which is probably 17th century. There are also 18th century additions on the north and west and a 19th century rear wing. The street range is rendered and has two two-storey bay windows and a mansard roof dating to around 1800. The 19th century work was carried out by the influential Torkington family. There is a strong room inside which suggests that they used the house partly for business. The interior has some early 19th century fittings. In the garden is a terrace made from masonry from the former Town Walls, including a reset 17th century doorway. {1} This house has an 18th century front probably concealing late 16th century origins [these dates are probably incorrect - see above]. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2}
