Full Description

PRN 38377 This three storey ashlar stone house dates to the late 18th century. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The main range of this house was constructed in 1790-1, however it incorporates a single early 18th century room. Beneath the east end of the main range is a vaulted undercroft with carved details suggesting a late 14th or 15th century date. In 1674 this was described as 'the cellar under the gild hall'. The guild is likely to have been Corpus Christi, one of the guilds associated with St Mary's Church, which had a guildhall which which was used by the Town Council in the 15th century. {2} Only a single, much altered, bay of the medieval undercroft survives. The rest had preseumably collapsed at some point and been rebuilt as a cellar. The medieval structure probably had at least three bays. {4}
