Full Description

PRN 38261 The Town Hall was built in 1777 and designed by the architect Lovell [this attribution is probably incorrect - see below]. It is a three storey ashlar stone building with stone steps and iron railings. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The foundation stone for the Town Hall was laid in 1776, and the building was completed in 1779. The designer is unknown, however Henry Tatam (a cabinet maker, who designed his own house at 9 Barn Hill) 'explained' the proposed plans to the Council in 1775 and some of the architectural details on the main elevations may be his work. The entrance hall was remodelled and the present stair added in the early 19th century, possibly in 1819 by Thomas Pierce. {2}{3} The terrace to St Mary's Hill, with stairs, railings and cast iron lamps, was added in 1952 and was designed by Marshall Sisson. {3}
