Full Description
Small country house dating from 1628, with early 18th century additions and alterations, and minor 19th and 20th century alterations. Now divided into two houses. Built of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, and features a partially hipped, Collyweston slate roof with two coped gables topped with ball finials, three ridge chimney stacks and a single wall chimney stack. The building is laid to a Latin cross shaped plan form, and is of two storeys with attics, and partially over basement. The main north-west front has a central, two-bay gabled projection with four glazing bar sash windows and a central smaller sash in the gable above.
Inside, the window reveal over the door on the north-east front is inscribed in Lombardic script '1628, WI AHHBBYARD, WG OF HARBY, AK'. The top flight of the dog leg stair inserted in the screens passage is of mid 17th century type with large turned balusters. A ground floor room in the cross wing has a small 17th century stone fireplace. The projecting wing of the north-west front contains a ground floor room with decorative plaster ceiling, richly moulded cornice and plastered fielded panels to the walls. The mirror over the fireplace has en eyed and shouldered surround with guilloche, bead and reel end egg and dart mouldings. The first floor room over has a very fine plastered ceiling with oak leaf and acorn relief designs, with mirror, cornice, and plaster fielded panels as ground floor. It also has a contemporary 16th fireplace in marble.
