A country house with a surviving fragment of an early 17th century predecessor. The main block dates to 1733 with additions of 1784, 1802, 1840, 1894 and 1934. The 1733 house was probably by George Portwood of Stamford, and the porch before it, brought from Syston Park in 1934, was probably by L. Vulliamy in 1824. The house is in ashlar and gault brick, with a hipped slate roof. The east front is of three principal phases: the main three storey block of 1733, an apsidal ended wing added to the right in 1802, and the nineteenth century porch. The front of the 1733 block is of five bays and three storeys, while the apsidal ended block comprises two widely spaced bays, the lower two storeys of which were built in 1784, with the topmost being an addition of 1802. At the rear of the house is the seventeenth century service block, a survival from the house which burnt down in 1731. Inside, the hall passage and staircase are all of 1733, while the dining room, added in 1784, retains a fine six panelled door, a white marble fireplace, and a well restored frieze. The drawing room was remodelled in about 1840, and there is a fireplace of that date. The former dining room is now the library, with panelling of 1894. The latter was extended in 1909. Apart from the addition of the front porch in 1934, some considerable restoration was required after the stewardship of the house by the Army during the Second World War. The investigation was primarily concerned with the ground floor kitchen/lobby/office area occupying the north-western part of the 1733 building.
