Full Description

Early 18th century table tomb in the churchyard of the Church of All Saints. It is a coffin shaped slate slab with a rounded top on plain pedestals. The inscription is to Elizabeth Mason, 1704, and John Mason, 1733. The monument is carved on the top with graffitied images of shoes. Slate is an unusual material for a monument of this kind. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} The practice of carving the outlines of shoes may have been quite common in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is thought to have functioned as a particular form of signature, making a very personal link to the structures with their owners. {2}
