Full Description
This two storey rectangular brick chapel was built in 1819. The south elevation has a contemporary datestone. The entrance gate is made of a re-used stone arch which was formerly part of the Corn Exchange on Broad Street which was built in 1845. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
The present building opened in September 1819 and was a replacement for an earlier building which was demolished earlier that year. The previous building was built after 1719 and considerably altered in 1739. It was itself a replacement for an earlier chapel in St Paul's Street which was destroyed by a mob in 1714. The present building includes a reset date stone inscribed '1720' in the north wall, from the demolished building. A new vestry was built in 1862 and a section of the old corn market arcade was moved to this site for use as an entrance. In 1876 further alterations were carried out including new windows in the west wall. The interior has a gallery around three sides supported on cast iron Doric columns. Most of the early 19th century box pews and some benches in the gallery remain. There is a small early 18th century table in the entrance. {2}{3}
The church was built in 1819 with seats for 500. It is of red brick with a hipped tile roof. {4}
