Full Description

PRN 37897 [Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.] This house was probably built around 1600 with a plan consisting of two rooms and an end-passage in a line. Early in the 17th century a rear wing was added, and in around 1800 extensive alterations were made including the addition of two full height bay windows on the street front and a second rear wing. The street front was also extended in height. The main doorway, at the west end of the street front, is original. The interior includes an early 17th century fireplace and panelling. The other fittings date from around 1800. {1} This two storey house has an 18th century ashlar stone front (now cement-rendered) on an earlier house [the date of the street front is probably incorrect - see above]. It has an attractive stone slate roof and two two-storey bay windows. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} It is suggested that this house originated as a medieval house with a first floor open hall above one or two rooms with a staircase at the rear, which has subsequently undergone various alterations, however the evidence for this is not certain. It is possible that the original roof survives wholly or in part, however it is not currently accessible. {4}
