Full Description

PRN 37874 This house has a datestone on the chimney reading '17th October 1674', however the street front is early 18th century. The interior has a fine staircase and several panelled rooms, the finest of which is on the ground floor and is dated to 1674. This is an important house. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This house was built in 1674 (this date is recorded on a panel formerly on a chimney), and described as 'the most distinguished house of its time in the town'. It is similar in style to Lyndon Hall in Rutland. It has an ashlar street front and coursed rubble rear wall. The exterior has been little altered. Internally, some of the rooms on the ground floor were subdivided in the early 19th century. The interior fittings, including panelled rooms, the staircase and fireplaces, are mostly contemporary. {2} This house is in the Artisan Mannerist style, in a type which occurs elsewhere in the region. It has an unusual Low Countries style pattern to the roof, with two sets of dormer windows. {3}
