Full Description

PRN 37822 [Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.] This house was built by Henry Tatam (an alderman and cabinet maker) some time between 1796 and 1801, and was described as 'newly built' in 1802. He bought the site from Rev William Stukeley who had previously owned a house there. Tatam's design for the front elevation of the house includes details derived from his job as a cabinet maker. The rear wing was rebuilt around 1840 by James Atter who bought the house in that year. The interior includes many original fittings including a staircase. An inscribed stone panel, originally in the garden, has been reset over the back door. Little remains of the garden designed by William Stukeley. The garden walls include sections of the former town wall and include an early 17th century gateway. {1} This house was designed by George Portwood for William Stukeley in 1741 [this actually refers to the previous house on this site - see above]. It is two storeys in height with attics and is built of ashlar stone with a slate mansard roof and has an early 19th century projecting porch. It stands on the site of an earlier house from which Charles I is said to have escaped in disguise prior to his capture in 1646.
