Full Description

PRN 37652 This two storey coursed rubble house incorporates the remains of a 13th century open hall, including a two bay blind arcade, part of a window and a tie beam and braces from the original roof (although the current roof covering is modern asbestos pantiles). For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This house includes a considerable part of a late 13th century open hall. The surviving features include a wall arcade, a window and another possible window jamb and a braced tie beam (part of the original roof). They indicate that the house originally consisted of an open hall at the west end and a two storey section containing service rooms to the east. Later in the middle ages much of the exterior walling was rebuilt and a floor was inserted into the hall. New windows, an external chimney stack and a new doorway were also added at this time, re-using 13th century mouldings. By the late 18th century the house had been divided into two cottages. The current street front has an early 19th century character. A rear wing was added before the late 18th century but this was rebuilt in the late 19th century. Another 19th century wing was recently removed. The 13th century features came to light in 1970 during alterations. There is a scratched merchant's mark of probable 15th or 16th century date on one window jamb. {2}
