[Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.]
This building originated as a single timber framed house of probable late medieval date. No. 43 and the present through passage (Brooks Court) formed the main range and no. 44 was the cross wing. A further timber framed wing has been added to the rear of no. 43. No. 44 is jettied on the front and side. In 1656 a new two storey bay window was added to the north wall of no. 44 and there is a date panel recording this date in the gable. {1}
This house has a 17th century type slate roof. It has a low, three-storied front which is painted, stuccoed and tiled with a 19th century shop front. It has been much restored. The interior of the former barn is now much restored but has a good original roof. No. 44 has a smaller ashlar stone gable dated 1656 with a two storey bay window. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2}
