Full Description

Grade II listed school and school-master's house, dating from 1876. It is red brick and stock brick and has a slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles, stone coped gables with kneelers, ornate stone and wrought iron finials, decorative brick eaves and five tall lateral stacks with moulded, decorative brick heads. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that a school, with attached schoolmaster's house and garden, was rebuilt by subscription in 1835, though no information is given about the previous school. This was deemed 'inadequate to the wants of the parish' and a new school (the current building) was planned at an estimated cost of £1600. {2}{3} The 1904 OS map shows the school in a rough U-shape plan with three connected east-west aligned ranges, with the schoolmaster's house appended to the south elevation of the southern range. Modern extensions and infill have been added to the west in the 20th and 21st centuries. {4}
