Full Description

Grade I listed manor house built in red brick and coursed limestone rubble with some timber framing. It has plain tiled roofs with stone coped west gables and ornate brick Dutch gables to the north and south, two gable and single ridge stacks and two with paired angle shafts. It is a notable example of Fen Artisan Mannerism. {1} The building likely retains traces of the former medieval house in its west wing with evidence of an open hall. While the building itself is originally of medieval date it has been altered, expanded, and rebuilt through the intervening centuries. {2} The building was subject to tree ring analysis recorded in a 2011 report {3}. The thirty five samples of extant timbers suggest the earliest timbers were felled in 1484 and were probably used to build the open hall and solar, and were reused in the roof of the present hall. At some point in the mid 16th century it appears a floor was added into the hall. A timber partition all was inserted into the hall range at some time in the early 17th century (1611-1636), and the east parlour in the present cross wing and the roof of the hall and solar were reconfigured into their current arrangement in around 1650.
