Full Description
47 and 48 High Street were originally built as a pair of adjoining houses in the late 18th century, and were later combined and converted to form an inn. The exact date of this conversion is uncertain, although a date inscription of '1786 W.H.' marked on the left hand rainwater hopper could suggest the White Hart had been established by that time. The establishment was certainly in place by January 1856, when it was listed in a local newspaper of that time as re-opening following extensive alterations and improvements. The landlord at that time was named as a John Ockleford. By 1887, the establishment was known as the White Hart Hotel. The building continued in use as a public house until 1986-8, when it was extensively remodelled and converted back into two separate properties with commercial premises on the ground floors. Number 47 was in use as a fast food restaurant until the early 2000s and was later used as a shop, while number 48 has been a building society since its conversion.
The buildings are of three storeys and roughly rectangular in plan. They are constructed of painted brick laid in Flemish bond, and feature pitched roofs covered by pantiles.
