Full Description

PRN 37207 This house is probably late 16th or early 17th century in date. It is two storeys high and constructed of coursed rubble with a modern slate roof. It has two two storey bay windows. One side wall has been rebuilt. A medieval archway, previously at 46 High Street, has been incorporated in the rear wall. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This stone house is the surviving portion of a 17th century house. It has two stone-mullioned two storey bay windows flanking a modern door. There was formerly a third bay window to the north, however this room has been demolished. A 15th century two-centred doorway, removed from 46-47 High Street when it was demolished in 1966, has been reset in the east wall. {2} It is uncertain whether the medieval doorway was in situ at 46-47 High Street before its removal. It may have come from the Grey Friary in Stamford, along with other medieval fragments found during the demolition. However the former position of the doorway, supporting a jetty and leading into the hall, does suggest that it was in situ. {3}
