Full Description
PRN 37203
This two storey coursed rubble house appears to date from the early 17th and 18th centuries although it may have earlier origins. The interior includes a 13th century pillar which has been encased during later alterations and is no longer visible, however it indicates the possible early origin of the house. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
This house has a 17th century or earlier origin although the street elevation is early 19th century. In around 1940 report was made of a 13th century stone pier in the house, however this has not been traced since and may refer to another house (possibly no. 53). The house appears to have originally had a hall, however major alterations were carried out around 1797 which included changes to the interior. The interior includes some original beams, now encased, and an 18th century fireplace (said to be reused) and late 18th century panelling in the entrance hall. There is a rear wing which probably dates to the mid 19th century. {2}
There is said to be a 13th century pillar buried in the walls of this house. This was not seen however other features such as the thickness of some walls, a low arch in one wall and some peculiar massive carved masonry suggest that the house may well be of medieval date. {3}
