5-6 London Road was the subject of a building survey, conducted in May 2014, prior to its proposed conversion and change of use. The building is thought to date to the early 19th century, and is of hand-made brick, laid in an English Garden Wall bond, with a pitched slate roof. The building was originally divided into two shop units with residential accommodation in the basement and upper floors. This layout was briefly changed in 1889, when the two units were combined to form a single butcher's premises, before being split back to two separate units in 1905. The two units were again unified in the 1950s, when the building was converted to a print works. Aside from the changes to the layout of the shop floor, the building has been subjected to only relatively minor alterations, with a few of the doors and windows being blocked during its conversion. {3}{4}
