Full Description

PRN 25410 The red brick two storey granary was built around 1831. At the right hand end there is a wide arched opening. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The granary is part of a complex of farm buildings dating from around 1831. These include a barn, stabling and animal shelters or storage sheds arranged around a central yard. The buildings form a planned, organised complex representing comtemporary farming innovations and ideas. All the buildings apart from the granary have been out of use for some time and are in various stages of dereliction. The east range of animal shelters or stores is almost entirely destroyed, its remains consisting of a row of arches. The granary has been recently altered, especially on its upper floor, and has consequentially suffered a loss of original details and character. It has been reroofed using the original timbers but without regard for the original configuration. The lower floor retains details from its use as a stable including feeding troughs, partitions, 'keeping holes' for storing grooming kit and some areas of stone cobbled floor. Other buildings retain functional details such as some original window timbers, doors, ventilation brickwork and bricked-up sluices. The barn is probably the least altered building although it is overgrown and unused. {2}
