Full Description
Former Church of England and nonconformist cemetery chapels, now a single oecumenical cemetery chapel and store-room. Built in 1854, of stock brick with limestone ashlar dressings, and features ornamental slate roofs with stone coped gables, decorative ridge tiles and cross finials. The two former chapels are single-storey, and are linked by a tall pointed archway, crowned with a tower with an octagonal spire. For the full description and legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
The chapels were visited in 2010, as part of a survey of nonconformist chapels. The southern structure was the Church of England chapel, now in use as the oecumenical chapel. The northern structure was the nonconformist chapel, that was still in use as a store-room at the time of the survey. Pevsner thought the chapels might have been designed by the architect James Piggott Pritchett. {2}{3}{4}{5}
According to the Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Mercury of 16th June 1854, a large number of plans for the cemetery chapels and lodge (see PRN 27296) were submitted to the Holbeach Burial Board. The board are said to have selected the plans of Nicholson and Drury of Lincoln as the preferred design, with the cost of the chapels set at £800. Given that William Adams Nicholson had died in 1853, the plans which were submitted are very likely to be the work of Michael Drury. {6}
